The Kumano Kodo Trail is a 5-day pilgrimage through several important Japanese cultural sites. It was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 2004.
Pilgrims (henro) can start this spiritual journey from several towns (map), including Koyasan. I have choosen the town of Kii-Tanabe to begin this new adventure on the Nakahechi Imperial Route (map PDF). The trails wind through forests and undulate across hills, providing the perfect setting for beneficial introspection in a peaceful environment conducive to meditation.
