The yak is a large ruminant—between 250 and 300 kg—domesticated by the Nepalese and essential to daily life in the mountains.

It can carry heavy loads, up to 130 kg, and ensures the transport of all kinds of supplies. When crossed with a cow, it produces a Dzo, a sturdy pack animal used for field work.

The yak also provides milk and cheese, meat, and wool used for fabrics and clothing.

During the winter months, its dung, dried on the walls of the houses, becomes an essential fuel for heating.
